A sleep study is a recording of a person's brain and body activity during the sleep state. Brain waves, muscle and eye movements, breathing, snoring, heart rate and leg movements are recorded using an instrument called a Polysomnograph.

Different sensors are attached to the patient's head and body that then transmit the brain waves, eye and body movements, as well as breathing patterns to a computer monitored by a Polysomnograph Technician. This data is then recorded and, after the study is completed, reviewed by a boarded sleep physician for analysis.

Performed during your normal sleep hours, a sleep study assists in the diagnosis of a variety of sleep disorders a person may be suffering from.

SLEEP STUDY PREPARATION

Lucid Sleep will schedule your study based around your normal sleeping hours. We advise our patients to follow your usual daily and nightly routines and activities prior to your study. We ask that you be on time to your study if scheduled at one of our sleep lab locations.

We do advise that you avoid applying makeup or using any gel or hairspray products on your hair, as electrodes will be applied to your face and scalp. We suggest you pack an overnight bag with your insurance card, completed forms (if appropriate), sleepwear, toiletries and a change of clothes, if needed. Don't hesitate to bring a book, your own pillow or blanket, or anything that will help you sleep better.

We ask that you to discuss any medial questions with your physician before your sleep study. Most doctors usually want to monitor your sleep patterns under normal circumstances, but we ask that you follow your doctor's orders.

POST-STUDY PROCESS

Once a sleep study is completed, the study data will be reviewed by a boarded sleep physician. With the final analysis and review complete, the information will be sent to your referring doctor. If you haven't already, please make an appointment to follow up with your doctor regarding the outcome of your sleep study.

Dependent upon your condition and disorder, your doctor may find it necessary to order a second study to determine the appropriate therapy needed to treat your sleep disorder.
